Students in the Division of Exploratory Studies (EXP) are supported by Illinois Abroad and Global Exchange (IAGE), the campus study abroad office. If you’re beginning to plan a study abroad experience, this page is your starting point for exploring the many opportunities available to you.
Why Study Abroad as an Exploring Student?
Studying abroad can be a powerful way to discover new academic interests, build professional skills, and develop personally. For students who are still exploring majors and career paths, international experiences often spark new ideas and provide valuable perspective for making informed choices about future directions.
Programs
While Exploratory Studies does not offer its own program-specific options, many study abroad programs are open to students of any major – including those who are undeclared.
You can begin your search using the Program Search tool, which includes a wide range of semester-long, summer, and short-term opportunities.
We especially encourage short-term, faculty-led programs, which offer meaningful international experiences without disrupting your timeline for declaring a major or meeting Intercollegiate Transfer (ICT) requirements. Many of the short-term programs are open to all students, as listed here.
Academic Considerations
Before you apply, make sure to review the following policies and procedures specific to Exploratory Studies students.
Advising
If you’re interested in studying abroad while in the Division of Exploratory Studies (EXP), talk with your academic advisor early in your planning process. Your advisor can help you identify the best timing based on your major declaration plans and the types of courses you will need to complete in order to successfully declare.
In some cases – especially for semester-long programs – it may make sense to study abroad after declaring your major, though select semester programs and especially short-term or summer programs can be a great fit during your time in EXP.
Your advisor and the team at Illinois Abroad and Global Exchange (IAGE) can work with you to find the right program for your goals and timeline. Be sure to also attend a First Steps Workshop to learn more about getting started.
Course Approval Process
Exploratory Studies students should review the course approval process prior to departure.
