Frequently Asked Questions

The University has extended the suspension of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign study abroad through January 15, 2021. This decision applies to Summer 2020, Fall 2020, and Academic Year 2020-21 programs and includes all program types (exchange, direct enroll, provider programs, faculty-led, and study abroad by petition). To learn more, visit covid19.illinois.edu.

All students with active Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 applications were notified of this decision and refunds have been issued. Read about the refund process on the COVID-19 Refunds page.

You can use your Illinois International scholarship through Fall 2021. Contact the administering unit to defer it. You will also need to contact your study abroad advisor to defer your program acceptance to your desired term.

Campus leadership hopes to make a decision about Spring 2021 international travel in August or September. We continue to advise for programs and encourage you, if able, to complete and submit an application for your desired program.

Yes. If Spring 2021 study abroad programs get cancelled, contact your study abroad advisor to change the term of your application so you do not have to re-apply. You will not be charged the $100 application fee until campus leadership makes an official decision about Spring 2021 study abroad.

No, there are no Fall-only contracts with University Housing. There are only Academic Year and Spring-only contracts with University Housing.

If the University allows students to study abroad in Spring 2021, you can request a housing refund for the Spring semester. You do not have to let housing know that you are studying abroad until December. Campus leadership hopes to make a decision about Spring 2021 international travel in August or September.

You can get a Spring-only contract with University Housing. Spring-only contracts will become available starting in August.

If you are currently unable to do so, wait as long as possible up to your program's application deadline to apply for a passport. In the meantime, complete other application requirements.
